I am planning a 3 day trip in Virginia with a couple of my buddies from May 9-12. I was thinking about Southbounding from Atkins to Whitetop. I am aware that this is right before Traildays. How crowded will the trail be? If it will be packed, plan B is to hike from Buena Vista to Reed’s Gap.

I would suspect it would be pretty crowded, but then maybe not as bad as the trail south of Damascus. I was planning on taking a couple of kids to the Highlands on the weekend of the 14th, but decided on the 21st instead to hopefully avoid an overcrowded trail.
Anyone have input on the possible weather around that time?
