Miss Janet,we have hundreds of miles of the most beautiful beaches in the country, here in the garden state.Everything from the glitz of A.C.and the casinos,to small dry towns.Boardwalks, amusement rides and plenty to eat,Most close enough to Phila.for a historic day trip.Probably lots much closer to you though.Good luck with your research.Oo

Sea Islands and Lowcountry in South Carolina are interesting. Beautiful Beaufort by the sea, 29 miles from Yemassee. Maritime forest up to the beach on many islands but you have to research. Charleston to Savannah very interesting area. Try Edisto Island and Hunting Island. Hunting Island in very tropical and easy to access but call ahead for rental/camping. See Beaufort movies, “the Big Chill” “The Water is Wide”, “Forest Gump”, “The Great Santini” “the Prince of Tides” and a few more for views.
The homes in Charleston, the squares in Savannah. Much to choose from.
St. Augustine Fla. good beach, pretty water, lots to see and do.
Panama City Fla. (redneck reviera) pretty white beaches.
Fla. Keys, pricey, few beaches, but the water is the best and never forgotten.
Have fun where ever you go.
Life is sweet, and so is the tea!

If you make it near Charleston, take an afternoon for hiking in Cypress Gardens. There are a few trails, but the coolest thing is the boat tours! Boat rental (flatbottom skiff with or without guide) is included in the admission, and you can see a few gators, lots of turtles, and all kinds of birds while paddling BETWEEN the Cypress trees. It’s awesome! You can paddle right up to the old church that Mel Gibson rode up to in The Patriot. (Well, it’s not so old…I think it was made just for the movie. But it LOOKS old!).
If it’s just a weekend, you might check out Congaree Swamp - the nation’s newest National Park (#57). The boardwalk will probably be crowded, but they have several miles of trails with backcountry camping that they say is rarely used.

Hey Janet - it would kinda depend on what you wanted to do/see on a beach vacation. I have vacationed for years in NC along Emerald Isle - which is great if all you are looking to do is sit on a beach and relax, there aren’t too many people (for a beach) - if you are looking for people and parties, I go to Virginia Beach - and then there is everything in between!! Thanks for the hospitality - see ya later!

i love the gulf of Mexico side of the beaches…Destin, Florida, & all the smaller coastal towns nearby (BUT NOT PANANMA CITY BEACH…TOO COMMERCIAL!)…for their sandy, white beaches & great atmospheres…very friendly towns…
…but, i’d rather be hikin’!

Topsail Island NC is the best kept secret on the east coast…better shutup huh. 21 miles of barrier island with 3 small towns of N. Topsail Beach…Surf City…and Topsail Beach. It has a few condos and many places to eat…but not much else commercial wise. It’s south of Jacksonville NC (Camp Lejeune Marine Base) and north of Wilmington NC. It’s my second fave place in the world…after the AT.

It’s reachable only by ferry (you sit in your vehicle while on the boat for about half an hour), at the end of the chain of resorts that includes Cape Hatteras. I went there once for a change of pace after doing a section of the A.T. in central Virginia. Stayed at the National Park Service campground. Not TOO crowded, the “town” has a quaint village atmosphere, and not that expensive compared to all the crowded resorts you pass through to get there.
Of course, my experience was in early August. 4th of July weekend? You gotta be kidding! Expect crowds almost anywhere, and to pay top dollar.
