Vermillion Valley Resort Question

So I keep hearing that Vermillion Valley Resort is unbelievably expensive. Say I walked there off the JMT. Is it possible just to pick up a package for $10 and leave? Everyone keeps saying that I should expect to spend $100. Where does that come from?
Also, is there a town less than twenty miles from the trail that I could hike to?

i was thinking the same thing.

i saw that last post. sounds like they were forced to spend 100 dollars. i’m sure you could just pay the $10 and leave, but you might want to pay for the ferry trip
$18-round trip ticket for ferry
$10-resupply pick-up
=$28.00
how is that $100???

Also, is there a town less than twenty miles from the trail that I could hike to?
i would’nt go this route. it just seem’s like to much of a pain in the ass, with all the other options out there.

I was there just less than a month ago on a PCT northbound thru-hike. Problem is they suck you in with their first free beer and first free night. After that it’s all downhill because the cheapest dinner you can get there is in the order of 15 bucks and most people I met spent 2 or 3 times that. From my experience the average person spent about $100 per day. Big rip off if you ask me but seeing as how I was exhausted, had lost 17lbs. in 2 weeks, and had no other options I made my $100+ donation. Bottom line: If you can avoid the temptation of spending any time there I would. Just a matter of personal will power and when most hungry hikers reach there they don’t have it.

It’s a great place to stay. You don’t have to sleep in the bunk house, you can pitch your tent. You don’t have to eat grilled swordfish, you can cook up a liptons. I took two zero’s there in 2002 and spent about $120 for me and my buddy, it’s possible to get away without spending the big $100.

It was expensive for a hiker budget, but we had a great stay there! Great people, good timing for a break and the food was awesome!

If you don’t want to spend $18 to take the ferry ride you could add around 8 miles to your hike and walk in… (I think its around 4 miles each way)…

Enjoy the JMT!!
