Vermont In Early May

I'm seeking opinions on the hiking conditions in Vermont in early May. I would be starting a section from southern Mass. but am more concerned about Vermont.

There is a reason they call it Vermud in early May. We hiked Bennington to Maine junction in late May. The bugs were awful. Mud or bugs. Your choice.

I have hiked in VT in May and it is very muddy. More so then the usual ankle deep VT mud. Early May you may be pre bugs but if your not the black flys and mossies will be awful. The official position is that the trails are closed due to erosion problems due to the wet conditions but I do not think it is enforced. That being said I think you and the trail bed will be a lot happier waiting til it dries out a bit. On the plus side you get a lot more views before the leaves come out and will have shelters pretty much to your self.
