Virginia bugs - Appalachian Trail

I seem to recall a hiker warning me about noseums or gnats or some early-spring pest in Virginia. I’m planning to do a section of the AT near Damascus in mid-May. Does anybody think a headnet would be worth the minimal weight/space in the pack? Thanks and happy trails!

I spend a lot of time in the north Georgia mountains in May and I hiked through Damascus in very early May of 2002. I’ve never experienced bugs to the point that I would have thought about putting a mesh sack on my head. If the thought of a few bites bothers you though, I would suggest bug spray rather than the a headnet. It should provide a satisfactory but much more comfortable solution to the problem.
