Wingfoot will do the AT again in 2005. Would you hike with him?

Hey U-Bolt, as you well know, this thread was just beaten to death over at Whiteblaze where there was a lot of agreement that the whole subject of WF has been pounded to hell and back, time and time again? I gotta wonder why you are bothering to bring this up here. Don’t people have anything else worth discussing?

Start worrying about U-Bolt. He’s the main person in his life. How does this question help you out?

i really do not want to start a foodfight, this question is genuinely asked out of pure, unadulterated, idle curiosity:

on page 104 of the 04 Thru-Hiker’s Handbook, dan bruce has the following comment:

“Elephants have been told for years to avoid the Erwin area, and the warning seems to have worked. You will not see any elephants hanging around town nowadays. If you are puzzled about the meaning of this, ask around . . if you dare!”

well, i admit to being puzzled, and i’m not afraid to ask locals. it’s just that i’m gonna be going SOBO and i’m afraid i’ll forget about this long before i get there. anyone have any idea what he’s referring to ?

thanks.

They hanged an elephant from a crane here a long time ago.

Oh, so THAT’s where it happened, I didn’t know that…I saw a picture of it in a book once, very very ugly. I think maybe an angry elephant escaped from a circus or something, went wild destroying property and/or people in the town, so they hung it from a crane by the neck after shooting it dead, maybe about 1915 or so? Kind of like the captured shark in Jaws. Oh, my memory is fading…anybody else remember this?
