Walking the LT in July?

Greetings hobos, vagabonds, and traveling types!

I'm trying to plan a trip this July to finish up the Long Trail starting where the AT takes a right into New Hampshire. I was wondering if any folks out there might be walking around during this time. If so, let me know.

Also, if you’ve walked this section of the LT before, I’d love to hear some stories, advice, etc.

Thanks…Monkey

I am looking at starting in early Sept or late August, not sure what the advantages of that would be except for a reduction in bugs. What kind of fall colors can I expect to see going north and anything else you want to add in would be appreciated. If there are really good reasons for doing the trail earlier in the summer such as Space Money is doing, let me know.

I’ll also be hiking the LT this july. I have a 21 days window and hope to hike it in that time, if not, as far as i can get will suit me. I rekon to be hitting the trail between the 5th and the 10th. See you out there.

I am planning on doing section hikes this summer. Staring this coming Memorial Day weekend I plan to hike Division 1. Then on July 4th weekend hike Division 2. Then on July 29th I plan to stay out for about 3 weeks. I hike very slow so I am not sure how far I’ll get. Has anybody hiked in the Division 1 area late May/June?

Cheers and Hikerdude,

Hope to see you both out there. I also plan to start sometime after the celebrations of the 4th. It might take me a few days to get up there from the southern states though.

I’m now pondering where to start…the Inn at Long Trail or further south at the Vermont/Mass border. Either way, I’ve got some itchy feet that need to do some walking. Have a good stroll through the mountains all!

I’m planning on heading South from the Northern terminus on July 25 or 26. I’ll try to do the Vermont AT from the Maine junction to Norwich, as I am slowly section hiking the AT (gone from BSP to Norwich, so far).

Have a great time on the trail!

Great trail, wish you luck. One word of caution! Porkies love hiker boots, hiker packs or anything that may have any hint of hiker sweat.DONT LEAVE ANYTHING ON THE SHELTER FLOOR.They wont harm you but just be aware you might wake up hearing them slowly eating the shelter or your boots.David Logan Shelter looked like someone took a wood hasp to the floor.
On the positive side, the further North you get the better the views. My favorite Mountains:BurntRock Mountain,Camels Hump,Mt.Mansfield.:cheers

We hiked the section starting at this point last summer. We went from Sherburne (Inn at LT) to App Gap (Rt 17) over week last July.

The first thing that you notice north of the AT is that the LT becomes quite a bit more rugged with narrower trails, fewer blazes, and a LOT less brushing than the southern 100 miles of the LT. There are also a lot of great peaks and open ridge walks on this section. There are also a lot fewer blue blaze trails. You can go for miles without crossing a junction. If the weather is clear, which it was not last summer, then the views are great.

There are plenty of shelters, though there is not quite as much tenting space as the southern sections. Skyline Lodge is one of the best shelters on the entire LT. The trail also crosses over several ski areas: Middlebury Snow Bowl, Mad River Glen, Sugarbush, etc. We never had problems finding water.

This summer we’re out the first week of July from App Gap to Rt 15. Camel’s Hump and Mt. Mansfield await!!

See you out there.

thanku much for the info. I have only happened upon Porkies on the trial. Never in a campsite. This should be interesting.

I came up with this explanation of how porcupines get into really high shelter bunks, while on the LT a LONG time ago.

Four porkies climb up a properly situated, springy birch tree near the shelter. The tree bends under their well fed influence. Three jump simultaneously out of the tree. Astro Porkie is launched in a graceful, suborbital arc into the shelter, where fresh salt stained treats await.

Anyone know if there are possible firework views from goddard, story spring or vondell shelters? planning out an LT thru hike and am thinking about the 4th on the trail. Not too familiar with the towns in the area…
thanks,
