WANTED: Survival Kit Suggestions & Input

Greetings Everyone!

I’m new here, the name’s “Ranger Rick,” I’m a retired US Army Ranger/DI.

I’m trying to come up with some new ideas in what other type of small, compact, survival items that can be added to my product “The Spec-Ops Survival Necklace.” As well as other uses that the attached items can be used for too.

So far I’ve heard every suggestion from adding a small compact folding knife to a mini-micro GPS. (Yea, right, where in the hell am I suppose to find one of those?)

Please understand that whatever you suggest, it’s gotta be small, compact and lightweight or it defeats the purpose of what it’s for. Which is as a temporary, short term and or back up survival kit and NOT a long term “Castaway/Robinson Caruso” type of survival kit . And you wouldn’t believe how many people seem to think that’s what it’s suppose to be for, used as a long term survival kit.
Anyway, if you have not seen it before, come on by and check it out on my website (www.therangerdigest.com) and let me know how you think I can improve on it.

Appreciate your suggestions as well as your constructive criticism and input, take care and God bless.

Can’t tell but do you have a pointy X-Acto blade in there?

How about a thin tube of Reese’s pieces (I love those things), a cigar and one weatherproof match?

Just kidding. It sounds like an excellent idea. How about a very small rolled up, laminated mirror (with small hole in the centre)? A survival mirror needn’t be a “mirror”. I was thinking more of that card you can get which is silver but very reflective. The hole to be used for aiming the light to your target. What do you think? Has that already been done before? It could come rolled up in a small piece of tubing (titanium?) to keep it in good nick.

Oh well, that’s Ross’ silly suggestion.

I think your talking about a mylar mirror. Similar to the credit card reflective logos. That’s the stuff you see cheap sun shades made out of or the bill of a golf hat. See thru on one side mirror on the other. If its a roll strip it could also double as sun glasses for snow. Micro film size, Rick? 110 camera film size, 3/4 x 4’ would roll to nothing. Or a silver foil mylar ballon.

im trying to think of something and im sure i will; i guess my first thought is my survival kit is my pack. its always with me. the only time its not is when i am at a shelter and i am going to the privy. I take it with me to make water; everywhere. its my life on the trail, well; and in town. if i fall and slide off the trail; its staying attached to me; its clipped and double clipped and looped and all that good stuff. (and yes; ive fallen down off the side of the trail before and done the ass over teakettle thing. took me forever to get back up to trail level the grade was so steep).

I guess my question is why do u need this kit on a necklace? is it to wear when your pack is off? could u put it in a detachable fannypack? I dont know. but u can never go wrong with one of the emergency heat blankets that are also reflective; make an emergency shelter; and probably would fit in a 35 MM film canister.run a cord through the middle of the cannister and its a cool pendant. maybe even stash a few matches or a flint and steel inside the canister too depending on how tight u can get the emergency blanket. I’ll try to think of more later.

  1. a small focal lens (plastic) can be used to focus sunlight for starting fires.

  2. a non-lubricated condom makes an excellent water bladder.

Great Idea bushwhack! Also if you magnetise one end of the strip you could float it in water and have a compass also

Don’t needed to, just set a needle on it. Also a straw for sucking water from cracks/leaves if you had a strip long enough and rolled like film just pull the middle to extend and it tightends like a chinese finger.

But than you would have to carry the extra weight of the needle and keep it on the neckless. The straw is a good Idea if we could figure how to attach a micro filter to it

I once made survival kits and gave them away at a Boy Scout Roundtable. They were wallet size. The items as I recall were; a survival sheet published by Seattle Search and Rescue, about 10 feet of masonry twine (thin strong nylon cord), a trashbag, a 12" x 12" sheet of aluminum foil (cooking container or signal device), 5" piece of hacksaw blade ground down to a sharp edge opposite the teeth, a small Bic lighter, a votive candle (short and stubby), a few bandaids, pencil and 3" x 5" cards, and a stick of gum (morale, not food value). Everything was in two sandwich zip lock bags in each pouch. The whole thing folded together like a wallet. The openings were opposite each other, so when it was folded, nothing could fall out. I chose hunter orange fabric to make the wallet out of.
