Water Concerns - The Colorado Trail

We are finishing out our section hike this year; Molas Pass to Durango. In this section the guidebook has a warning about a 20 mile portion without water available. Anyone have any intel on this? The guidebook has warned before about dry sections that never really panned out. Thanks.

It is for real. When you come down off of Blackhawk Pass, camel up big time. Either camp by the water there, or carry extra for a dry camp. The dry camp option is better, as Indian Trail Ridge is a lightning magnet with almost daily storms beginning around noon. I always dry camp in the vicinity of Orphan Butte then hit the ridge early to avoid the weather.

In wet years or early season you may find some seeps, but you can’t count on water until after Indian Trail Ridge.
