Just wanted to get some water info out there for some other sobos. First, coming out of Cuba there is some awesome new single track trail, well marked with carins and white tipped posts that continues for nearly 50 miles! One would have to try to get lost and we only used our maps/compass for general direction…marked as well and as often as the AT!
We found water at Jones Canyon (Wolf Piedra Lumbre section 1, 15.9miles)(Ley Map NM12 #9). It was just a trickle from the pipe into a tank but seems to be reliable. Good clear water.
Our next water was at Piedra Lumbre Sec. 3, mile 2.8(Ley NM 13, #1) and came from a hose which we had to remove from a spigot that fed two large metal tanks. Again, nice clear water(lots of pressure!).
Next, Taylor Mt. Segment, section 1, mile 2.3. This is located .2 miles off trail. This one is a “dipper” as described on Ley map NM 15, #3. The spring is located about fifty feet SSW from the muddy tanks they feed. You may want to filter the bugs and mosquito larve outa this one but the water was fine.
Ojo de los Indios (spring) was next for us. Located in the same section at 15.7 (Ley map NM 16, #1) Watch for this turn. It is just as it appears on the map. Faint double track turns off from the road BLM 1103 to the right. You will have to open one gate and the spring is located at the bottom of the canyon after a loose, rocky decent…but not difficult and really not that far. Don’t go thru the second fence near the bottom. The trail to the tanks is marked by a carin to the right just before that fence. Again, just a trickle from the pipe that feeds two large concrete tanks. No cattle have been using these so the water was clear in them as well. Unsure of water ahead, we carried a gallon each from here. With the cool, rainy weather, we didn’t need anymore 'til Grants. We did check Gobbler, Willow, Corner and Gooseberry Spring and found them all dry. Actually, there was a metal tank just before Corner spring that had a very small trickle from a pipe tight against the side of the tank that may provide a little water. Sorry, we didn’t check American spring or other sources listed in Wolf or on Ley maps. We have seen quite a few hunters so yogi’ing some water should be possible.
We’re not sure how to post this to CDT-L so if someone can get it there we would appreciate it. We will post more info as we are able…check the register in Grants PO for an update we will try to send from Pie Town. John and Dawn
