I live in the area, and it is really dry here. In fact, there is/was a forest fire a day ago up above Erwin in the Nolichucky gorge. Haven’t been on the trail, but I would suppose that the smaller springs may have dried up. It does look like we could get some rain today though. It hasn’t rained here in almost 3 weeks.

I live in Damascus and we are in the third week of no rain or only a very small amount. The trees / plants are really showing stress from the lack of rain. I hiked from Hwy 91 back to Damascus about two weeks ago and even then water sources were weak. I just hiked from Fox Creek (north of Damascus)back to town and almost all of the seasonal sources were dry, very dry or just seeps. I would not pass up any water you come upon hoping that there will be water at the next spot.

Anyone know if the water situation has improved from Erwin to Damascus? It might have snowed in the mountains last week, but I don’t know how much improvement (if any) that made.
Any places where it’s a good idea to “camel up” your water bottles before heading NOBO? Ive heard the spring at Overmountain Shelter was dry in October. What about the spring just before Vandeventer? Other places?
