Water filters - Appalachian Trail

Hello to all: I have given up on my MSR Water Works Filter due to constant problems (mainly very slow flow) even after repeatedly maintaining it. I’m thinking about the Katadyn Hiker or Pro Hiker. I usually get out just 2 times per year for 4-6 days each trip. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the older version PUR Hiker that I have used since 2000. I love it but it is a little heavy.

I’ve used the Hiker for several years and found it to be fast and effective. The main thing is to clean and dry the filter cartridge between trips. If you do that the cartridge should last a couple of seasons.

The Katadyn Hiker filter is the filter of choice among thru-hikers that filter, primarily because is pumps much faster than other filters.

As Po posted, flush it out, and dry it out after use and it will last at least a couple of years.

If used the same older version PUR Hiker and its fine but you do need to clean it. Also its wise to use a coffee filter or at least a bandana over the intake to make the cartridges last longer.

I hiked 500 miles from Springer to Mt. Rogers last year. I started with a MSR Waterworks. It had worked well for practice hikes in Shenendoah, but soon as my wife and I got started in GA, it gave us fits. I swapped it out for a Katadyn Hiker at Neels Gap and never had a problem since then. I will use it again in a few weeks when we start our next 600 miles.

We also carry a very light weight water bag that holds about 2 1/2 gallons of H2O. One trip to the water source is all we need. It also lets the sediment drop to the bottom of the bag. When we are ready to pack up and head out for the day, I hang it on my pack to dry out.

Good luck and have fun. L&F

Thanks to Big B, Po Campo, Peaks, Bamboo Bob and Lost and Found for your responses. It looks like I’ll be heading to REI this weekend to purchase my new Katadyn (PUR) Hiker filter. Your input was very helpful and greatly appreciated. Good hiking to all!!

Consider Aqua Mira chlorine treatment if you aren’t usually hiking with a group. I don’t notice any excessive taste and basically the main benefit is that you save about 12 oz. over the Katadyn Hiker plus a lot of space. There are other pros and cons, but to me, that 12 oz. is a major consideration.

I do have a Hiker and love it!
