Water flow in Smokies

I will be hiking from NOC to Davenport/Hot Springs from Aug 23- Sept 1. Do I need a water filter or is it flowing/deep enough at sources that I can just collect it on my Nalgene and treat it with iodine ? DOn’t want to suck on pond scum but would rather leave the filter at thome if not necessary.

Although you may already know this, the GSMNP office is very helpful and will give you up-to-date info re water, etc., along the trail. My wife and I will be hiking there the week ahead of you and I called them at 865-436-1297 and they were very nice. They said for me to call just before leaving home and they would give me water, weather, etc. updates. Great hiking, PaPa Larry. PS My wife and I love Zydeco and Cajun music and your food is outstanding!

In GSMNP both situations exists. There are at least 4 piped springs… 113, Derrick Knob, Icewater, & Tricorner plus water fountains at Clingmans (1/2 mile down to restroom & fountain) and Newfound Gap (right on trail). Mollies Ridge was dry early June, Russell Field was about 2-3 inches deep, Silers BAld and Double SPring Gap can be trickles as well.
