Planning to section hike GA in mid September…

Does anyone know where I can get news of how the water situation is on the GA section of the AT at the various shelters?

You might check georgiahikes.com. Post your question there. I haven’t been out much this year but usually water resources at the shelters are ok.

Just finished a section in GA. Lots of water sources were dry. The shelters sources were there, but some were just a trickle. They have had some rain in the last week or so, so things might be better. I never ran out of water, but I carry a lot to start with and I was very careful to ration. There were a few people that were up that did run out and I shared what I had with them. I did heear while I was there that the further south you were on the trail the drier it was, and that did seem to be true.

What about in NC? I have heard that north of Allen Gap to Irwin,TN is dry. Deer Park south of Hot Springs, NC is dry as well as Spring Mountain Shelter just north of HS.

A couple of weeks ago we hiked from Tanyard Gap to Devils Fork Gap. It was my intention to go all the way to Sams but due to the water situation and having my dog, we hitched a ride.

There is a spring at Allen Gap. Someone posted a sign directing us to water. It is near an old filling station that appears to have been abandonded for some time.

I spent the night some twenty feet from Spring Mountain. The water was basically at a drip. There was water at Jerry Cabin and then a small brook between Flint Mountain and Devil Fork.

I got a shuttle from a guy who lives near Big Bald. He said that it had been hotter this summer than ever in the first ten years that he had lived here. Below 4000 feet, the heat was stammering.

The drought is really horrible this year. Some of the waterfalls around the Black Mountains in NC are barely trickling.

I’ve been told that some formerly reliable water sources along the AT in the GSMNP actually ran dry.
