Just did a hike from Grand Canyon to Mt. Humphreys over Spring Break, the relevant section of the AZT being from Grandview Lookout Tower to FR418 just North of the peaks. Water sources I noted:
-Grandview Trailhead: A couple gallon jugs with plastic tasting water left at AZT Trailhead by the lookout tower. Cabin next to tower seemed unmanned.
Many snow patches along Coconino Rim, down to about 6,700’.
-Russell Tank: Big stock pond, lots of water. Pondy smell, cow poop around, water had yellow-ish tint but tasted alright. Some seasonal puddles in Russell wash @100 yds. North of the tank were much better.
-Unmapped Steel tank and adjacent trough in Russell Wash maybe 5 trail miles North of Moqui Stage Station: An inch or two of water in the trough, didn’t check tank.
-Anderson Tank: Dry.
-Moqui Stage Station: Tiny water cache left by hiker, maybe a gallon in stale plastic jug.
-Lockwood Tank: Lots of water, but muddy, trampled, poop everywhere, cows present.
-Upper Lockwood Tank: Smaller and more poop. Aggressive cows!
-Steel tank and adjacent trough about 4 trail miles North of EHV power lines at Rabbit Canyon. Inch or two of water in trough. Tasted fine. Steel tank sounded empty.
-Un-mapped stock pond obviously visible about 100 yds off trail directly at the EHV power lines in Rabbit Canyon. BIG tank, with LOTS of water. Cow tracks and poop present, but water tasted fine. Only slightly tinted. Best tank water I’d seen.
-Cedar Ranch. @5-6 gallon water cache in gallon jugs behind AZT sign.
Once in the vicinity of the peaks, I didn’t check out water sources because above @7,500, snow was everywhere and meltoff was running down nearly every crack and crevice that could drain water. Had a pretty good snow year here in Flagstaff, so tanks in the area should be fine for quite some time.
Hope this may be of use.
