We finished our section hike. Water Report for Colorado Trail Segments 14 (Part) to 17 – 8/29-9/2/2008
Segment 14 – last 5 miles to US 50
Mile 15.0 – There is a hand pump in the Angel of Shavano Campground. The campground officially closed on September 2, but you can probably use the pump.
Mile 15.1 – The North Fork is a fast flowing stream. Lots of water.
Mile 17.0 – “Dry Lake” (as named in the guidebook) is a small pond that is a possible water source, but you would have to wade through marsh grass.
Mile 17.8 – Lost Creek flowing well.
Segment 15
Water is always nearby in Fooses Creek, South Fooses Creek, or their tributaries for the first 8 miles. There are small streamlets crossing the trail as you near the upper reaches of the South Fooses drainage.
Mile 10.4 – There is a small spring here with water coming from a pipe.
We did not see the small spring south of Mile 12.6 that is described in the guidebook.
Segment 16
August 29
Mile 11.1 – Tank Seven Creek flowing well
Mile 12.3 – Cameron Park – water flowing in the brook
Mile 13.2 – logging road – about one-fourth gallon per minute flowing through culvert under the road
Approximately Mile 14.3 – There appears to be a partly fenced cattle pond about two-tenths of a mile south of the trail. Only saw this from a distance.
Segment 17
Mile 6.9 – Side trail to Baldy Lake – The lake looks a little bit like green pea soup. My prefilter turned green after 3 to 4 liters of water were pumped and pumping became much harder as a result. Had to renew the prefilter.
Mile 10.4 – Trail crossing of Razor Creek – barely a trickle of water flowing here
