Water Worries - The Colorado Trail

Our group of 8 is getting ready to tackle segments 22-24 the weekend after this one. The issue of water has come up as a concern. With the dry winter, has anyone heard of campsites with a “full glass of water” (per the databook)not having water available? We arranged all of our nightly campsites to coincide with full glasses … anyone have thoughts on this? Many thanks.

You should be good most of the way. If the creek is dry at mile 1.2 of Seg 23 you can drop down off trail to Lost Trail Creek. It should be flowing. Don’t count on finding water in Cuba Gulch (seg 23) - carry enough from the little lake at mile 5.5 to get you to 13.5. Lots of water in Seg 24.

IMO, that’s the best hike on the CT.

Thankfully, the monsoons have begun in the San Juans. Don’t forget the rain gear.

I hiked Segment 22 June 21 & 22. The water at mile 8.7, where the Friends of the Colorado Trail Yurt once stood had been reduced to stagnant water in the marsh with a film forming on it. I was able to get adequate water in one of the stream channels in the Ruby Creek glacial cirque listed at mile 11.5. The creek is about a quarter mile and 200 feet below the trail. Conditions may have improved a bit this past week given the monsoonal airflow over this region.
