If they are asking the hikers to pay, this is simply and essentially the equivalent of a commercial advertisement for a restaurant and this entire thread should be deleted. If they are asking for donations to feed the hikers, or if they are indicating they are going to spend $5.00 per plate of “hiker barbeque” to feed thru hikers, thats a good thing, but I would venture to say that by that point in the trail, most would be able to eat WAY more than $5.00 of barbeque!

I met Pam last year, and her husband Craig…both awesome folks. They not only came out and did a FREE cook out, along with FREE shuttles, and FREE sodas, and cookies etc…but also invited me into their home for dinner, shower laundry…fine folks.

Why is a big deal for hikers to help out a little with the overhead of a lot of food?

Do you not believe a hiker can eat more then $5 worth of food, and see a free movie, and maybe have a great time, and met some wonderful people all at the same time?

Doesnt seem like an ad, seems like she is letting people know what is happening, and if you want to spend $12 on dinner somewhere and still be hungry, do it, otherwise, enjoy what they are offering.

Initially we wanted to do it all for free, I am all for that, BUT the budget for the event is very small since it is our maiden voyage. We had to stay out of the red and had few donors, so we had no choice but to place a nominal fee. Trust me, the dinner is going to be nice and everything at the movie, including snacks, popcorn and beverages IS FREE to the hikers. We can even arrange free transporation. If this event proves to be a reasonable success, then maybe in the years to come, getting businesses to donate and participate will be easier and we will be able to offer the whole thing for free. That is my hope. This event was intended to be a nice, inexpensive treat for the thru hikers that we enjoy so much each year. Sorry if it sounded like an ad, it truly was just an invitation.

Hey Lion King! Good to hear from you my friend! Thanks for the support! Guess if this doesn’t fly, I will just do an out of pocket dinner again for a much smaller, hand picked, group of hikers and the naysayers can go to McDonalds! YUCK! I thought it better to be able to pool some resources and feed a LOT of people, rather than just a few but…
Will I see you at Trail Days? Be there Saturday and part of Sunday.

The event was a success and all want to see it hapen again next year! It will, bigger, better and will get the word out sooner. Fed 36+ hikers and they were SO appreciative, it made me so happy that I followed through with it all. If you didn’t make it, too bad, but come next year!
