Anyone know when the best time to hike the C.T is?
I was thinking of doing it in a couple weeks. I’ve never been to Colorado and have no idea what to expect… What would the weather and bugs be like.?? Thanks

Hello BB,

Bugs can be annoying, but usually aren’t a big problem in Colorado. No black flies, and the mosquitos usually come a few at a time instead of a cloud. There will be some mosquitos in June and early July, diminishing through July and August.

Late June-Early July start should be fine.

Yeah, snow is the real deciding factor for a CT hike. We were on the CT over memorial day weekend and couldn’t continue our hike because of 6 ft of snow on the north side of the trail through Lost Creek. That was 2 weeks ago, and it should take you 1 week to get there from the trail head. I agree with Late June, early July, but a late July start is also really nice, as you will finish early september, a nice time in the San Juans…

Last year the CT hikers we met at the end of June were complaining about the bugs. We had about a week when the mossies were bad, but that was it. The upside to hiking that early is that there are lots of flowers. If you go later - in August - there will be no bugs but fewer flowers and less green.
