Weather In New England

Hey, I’m getting back out on the trail this year July 31st-August 1st and will be hitting the Whites immediately.

I went through part of the Whites last year a little over a month later than this with a 20 degree bag, and some extra layers of clothing. This year I’m planning on keeping my 45 degree bag, adding a liner, and bringing out some mid-weight thermals to wear under my long sleeve shirt and pants to sleep in. Does this sound seemingly safe for the Whites during this time of the year?

I’ll also be walking south through the rest of New England after the Whites as well, so any weather information on Vermont-south weather in August/September would be great.

Thanks.

I hike in the Whites year round as it is my back yard. I August you rarely get nights less then 40 but occasionally it happens. I think you have adequate equipment. I use a similar setup but usually do not go out for more then 2 to 3 nights in a row so can pick my weather. August is generally drier and the bugs are starting to die down.

I also think you’ll be OK. If you get very cold and/or wet during the night and you’re up high, just be ready to pack up and hike to avoid hypothermia. Don’t wait until you are actually hypothermic. If you start to shiver, move quickly and get warm.
