Weather in Smokies in late November

I will finally get my two weeks vacation starting November 18th and running through December 3rd and will be section hiking the AT starting from Fontana and heading northwards. What kind of weather should I expect? I don’t expect very good weather, so this will be a bit of an adventure/challenge vacation. I don’t want to be under prepared, but I don’t want to leave my ultralight roots too far behind.

Thanks,

Bob

it’ll probably be fairly nice. 50s and 60s during the day and 20s and 30s at night. of course, it could be snowing and cold. but i don’t believe the cold really sets in until around christmas usually.

Be Prepared!

Last year a winter storm blew into the Nantahalas two days before Thanksgiving. This area is just south of the Smokies. I was on the Bartram Trail. I had snow, ice, cold, and 60+mph (wind chill zero). The Smokies are gorgeous in the snow, but don’t sacrifice items you will need for winter weather, as it is too variable and too risky.

I hiked through deep snow the last week of March this year in the Smokies. Priceless views (though hard hiking) from the AT. Breathtaking, so enjoy the weather if you get the opportunity!
