Weather Reports via Radio

I’m planning on bringing a pocket sized radio with me mainly as a means of getting weather reports. Does anyone know if a list has ever been put together showing which stations broadcast weather reports along the AT? This would be a tremendous resource.

If no such list exists, I’ll try to make one this year and have it available for future generations of thru-hikers.

I carried a small radio shack pockect radio and had no trouble getting weather reports the whole way. Wether they were accurate or not was a different story. Beside that, other than food and equipment, weather is probably a most discussed topic on the trail. Everyone will have there say

I’ve got a 4 oz cheapie radio that picks up weather.
Most radios will automatically pick up the nearest signal.

The freqs for NOAA weather stations nationwide can be found here: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrbro.htm

There are seven in Virginia alone. Happy hiking!

Both Oregon Scientific and the Weather Radio Store (on-line) have a choice of portable weather-and-alert radios…broadcast. No need to search for a station. Pretty single function compared to a small AM-FM, but it does come with a NOAA alert system.

We carried a Sony AM/FM/TV/Weatherband radio. Got it from Walmart. $25 and worked awesome! You can pick up all sorts of radio stations along the trail. There are VERY few times when you can’t get anything. The Weatherband is usually a set of stations (1 thru 7 for example) so you don’t have to worry about specific frequencies.
