It doesnt look like anyone will be completing that part of the trail anytime soon. I wouldnt be surprised if we hear of several search and rescue operations.

Mount Washington set records this October for most percipitation and most snow in the month of October. They had previously had a 32 inch snow storm plus what they have received in the last week. I was going to go up last weekend but the weather would not break. I may try again this weekend.

squeaky started the at sobo the day before baxter closed. oct 14th. he was in andover as of the 23rd. it will be interesting to read about the early winter and him coming through maine and the whites. but i guess being somebody that went through the high sierras as early as he did on such a high snow year should not have too much of a problem, he is packing his ice ax and crampons i believe.

I passed Sqeaky on Oct 20th- about 6 miles north of the Kennebec- he’ll be hitting the worst of the weather that’s brewing up there now. Good luck to him, he’s going to need it.

Hey ya’ll. When we hiked in '01 Nobo we heard this story from Bruce at Hikers Paradise in Gorham about a woman hiking north doing a winter thru. She had done some rad stuff; Rainer, K2 etc. She crossed Washington in full winter boogie with drifts, sub zero conditions like it was every day. Don’t remember her name. Makes me feel as sissy and stuff. We can do anything if we’re nuts enough.

Spoke to my son, ‘Squeaky’ on Sunday 6pm USA time, he was in Andover drying off and waiting on the Outfitters to open in the morning to get more gear, Waterproofs, Thermarest, Boots etc to help him on his final Trail. He has heard about all the weather and the rain at present has been absolutely terrible but as usual he just laughs and says “that is what a challenge is all about”. He knows all about Mt. Washington and the snow fall there and around and he is very confident he will pull through, he actually thinks that the AT so far has been worse than the PCT and the Sierra’s. We all at home too wish him the Best of Luck on his final miles.

Recent reports from Mt Washington record a record snowfall for October with 72 inches of snow in the last 10 days. It is winter up there. I would think fresh powder would not facilitate the use of crampons and ice ax. Snow shoes and poles may be more appropriate until the snow gets packed down. However, I am not experienced in using crampons or ice ax. But I do ski in New Hampshire all winter.

Just spoke to ‘Squeaky’ and he has had to hitch back to ‘Andover’ after getting on a further ‘40 miles’. The snow that ‘Hurricane Wilma’ kindly dumped on him is terrible and for some of the walk he has had to crawl on his stomach so he does not sink too deep in the snow. Some of it was ‘Chest Deep’ in parts and the post holing was tough. The only thing too do was to go back to Andover and get 'Snow Shoes to help him through. Back off to the trail again and attempt to get ahead. Matthew still laughing cannot believe how bad the weather has got, he says it was far easier on the ‘PCT’ and going through the ‘Sierra’s’. So I wish all the other hikers going through that area the best of luck and take care of yourselves.
