Week Trip - Appalachian Trail

I’m planning a 7 day hike in June starting at Harper’s Ferry. This will be a practice hike so I’ll be reasonable on the mileage (7-10/day more or less). Does anyone have any recommendations or can predict how far you travelled in a week when you first started? I’m working my way south and trying to find a good end point so I can get back to DC for a train.

It’s really no problem doing at least 75 miles, if not 100, if you’re in decent shape and motivated. I did a cumulative of nearly 100 in about that same time, and some of the days were short (4-5 miles), balanced out by some that were between 15 and 18. I began at Springer and crossed over into North Carolina, but if you’re starting in Harper’s Ferry, you’ll be in for much more gentle terrain with fewer elevation changes. I just did about 5 miles south of HF and back on Monday - the weather was gorgeous, but not a soul in sight! Best of luck to you!

Thanks Wagon Wheel. That’s what I was thinking too. I’m looking forward to being out there. I’m thinking anywhere from 65-100 miles is a safe distance to plan for. What’s the shuttle system like along those parts of northern Virginia? I have the list from the AT homepage. Anyone ever use them? Cost? Reliability?
