Well, This Sucks

Had great going from Roosevelt to Sunflower, took a night in town for R&R and headed out Thursday the 8th. Just after lunch my left boot felt tight, so stopped to relace, it wasn’t the boot. Sharp ache all afternoon, but made it to Peeley TH (which by the way is blocked by two large pines down at the entrance). Called for a ride back to town, they came up that road in the dark! God Bless 'em.

Doc say stress reaction, precurser to stress fracture, two weeks in a boot, maybe back on trail in three weeks. So it goes but it sure is a bummer.

God Speed all you other folks, it’s a fabulous year to be doing the AZT!

shawn sorry to hear about your ankle, but in three weeks time it should be still doable. How was that section of the trail? I plan on doing the same hike in may and was curious about the route finding situation this year, im sure it will be better after this coming weekends trail work.

oh and what did you use for navigation?

Yeah, I hope to heal up enough to finish it all this spring. I understand the snow up north is still pretty deep, so the delay is not all bad.

That passage is pretty good, especially the first half. There are some sections that get a little funny, the trail runs up a very narrow wash–more of a ditch for a ways–but for the most part the route is quite obvious.

I used a Garmin 76CSx with the full tracks downloaded off the AZT website, and the tracks printed on TOPO at 1:30K scale. I take my hat off to the folks who hiked the AZT before such thorough information–the tracks and the data book are great.

I checked the Peeley TH late afternoon on Friday the 16th. The TH was open, but you can see where the big ones were. I did drive over a 3 inch tree on the road. A hand saw would fix that one.

. . . cuz, the gods willing, I hope to be re-starting from there in 2-3 weeks.

Restarted May 12 at Mt Peeley, made it to Pine yesterday early, taking an R&R day and will head out again in morning. Divide Trail is pretty bleak, but I made it and am looking forward to easier sailing to Flagstaff. Hoping the snow melts. Being late isn’t all that bad this year.

Hobbled into the Stateline campground about 8:45 yesterday morning. I suspect I am one of the last more-or-less thru hikers this year. Feels very good, would feel just a bit better if the 63 miles down south that I went around because of heavy snow in March were done. Will catch that as soon as possible. Congrats to all who enjoyed the trail this year.
