Will be taking my time and would like to have packs waiting for me. Not sure how to go about this. I've heard of people sending packs to the post office. Can any one help me?

Huge question. You seriously need to get a guide to hiking the AT. Tells all. Go to any large bookstore or to amazon.com and purchase a "how to" guide on the AT. Forget the individual books on each state.

Mail it to yourself "General Delivery" at any PO along the AT. Clearly mark "hold for thru hiker" on package. All the Post Offices along the trail are used to handling this type of mail. I believe if you send it Priority Mail you can bounce it forward free as long as you do not take it or open it from the counter. Marti is correct in that you should check some resources in order to determine the best places to send it. In addition to POs many of the hostels, hotels and outfitters along the trial will hold packages for thru hikers. Search the forum for pros and cons of mailing packages before you decide to go this route. Its not for everybody.

I was surprised no one mentioned AWOL's AT&T Guidebook. It will give you information on Post Offices, their Zip code, hours of operation, etc. It also tells you mileage between shelters, where water sources, and the names of hostels or hotels where you might be able to send a box to.
You can find this book at: www.theatguide.com
You can look at some sample pages to see what I’m talking about.

Put your real name on it, not your trail name, and be sure to carry picture ID with you for pick up!
