Unless you really like hiking in the snow, frozen ground, mud ,or just the melting run off it seems this winter in the south has been really rough on the trails. Lots of trees have fallen in NC. AND VA. I do several trips each year in winter and this one just has not been one of my favorites. Not to mention the wind chills.

I hiked the section between Burningtown gap and Wayah Bald in NC two weeks ago. Parts of the trail had 8-10 inches of snow and some fairly good sized blowdowns. One Blowdown was so big I had to go way off trail to get around it. I kept thanking the maintainers. They are going to have some work to do in that area.
