Wet Whites? - Appalachian Trail

I know we’ve had lots of rain this summer in New England, and even tornadoes and floods in southern New Hampshire. I’m trying to gauge trail conditions in the Whites - I’m wondering if people have found the Whites to be wetter than usual lately, and if so, has it been prohibitively wet or just sloppy. Thanks for the insight.

It’s probably OK up there by now. When I went through the Whites in late June, it was pretty horrible below treeline, but by the time I got to the 100 mile wilderness a couple of weeks ago, similar mud was starting to act more like clay, just a little sloppy in places.

I live up here and hike in the Whites every weekend. The trails are wet and muddy in places but that is normal for up here. The rocks are a little slippery due to constantly being wet and the stream crossings can be challenging particularly the ones low on the mountains. The Gale River where it crosses route three in Franconia was right up to the bottom of the bridge yesterday and a tree got weddged under it. Because there is little to hold the water the streams and rivers drop rather quickly after heavy rains and would be fine in a couple of days if we could get some sun. Tomorrow we are expecting 1 to 2 inches of rain and showers for the rest of the week. Even with all the rain though it has not been constant and just about every day has had some good weather sandwiched in between the showers.

I know this is asking a lot know that Trail Journals seems to have turned into a political discussion group (bashing Pelosi and Democrats over energy seems to be a popular sport for some people, and Krauthammer is not know for his balanced viewpoints but is this what Trail Journals has come to? ) My wife and I are headed to the Whites on Sunday for two weeks (Franconia, Bond Cliff, Wildcat, etc. ) for some hut to hut hikes. Any more comments on the weather patterns and the conditions up there would be appreciated.
Thanks. Pastor John

The “Dry River” trail was nearly flooded out in places when I was there in July & August. Not very dry at all.
