I always get, and follow, the local rules where-ever I plan to camp. I don’t have to worry about being under the radar. So why all the references to Stelth?

Stealth is when you use a pristine site and camp away from the trail. Usually it involves hiking until you crash for the night. It is a minimal camp with shelter, no fire or changes so when you move on no knows you where there. It’s basicly no impact and hidden. Sometimes thru-hikers use it to define camping in a semi-legal spot and sometimes it does break the rules.

For me there are several reasons for stealth camping. Most state park backcountry campsites get frequent use and any local critters know how to make an easy meal from leftovers and camper handouts. Shelter areas seem to fall into the same category as do frequently used campsite on other trails. In order to avoid any conflict or encouragement with the local critters I prefer to stay in other places. Stealth is the ultimate in leave no trace. Being a hammock camper I can set up in places were tents would not work. I can enjoy the view, get a good nights sleep and be gone in the morning. All without encouraging the critters or messing up the landscape.
