Don’t be concerned about seeing snakes and bears on the AT. It becomes a special moment you will treasure, not one that you will remember with bad feelings.
If you see a snake, back away and let it be. It will usually move off the trail as soon as it feels the vibrations of your arrival. If, heaven forbid, you are bitten by a poisonous snake on the AT - stay calm and walk slowly to the nearest road. Bites in the backcountry happen very rarely and are almost never fatal.
If you see a bear on the AT, it will be a black bear (no grizzlies in the East). Make some noise and it will run. You rarely see more than the hind end. If, heaven forbid, you are attacked by a black bear, fight and scream and kick and it will leave.
Turtle Walking
In my area cattle are the big problem. We have a few bears in the Marbles on the P.C.T. Mountain lions and rattlesnakes are more plentiful. One hiker had an arguement with a black angus bull and he beat the tail off of him. His trail name now is ‘bloody stick.’ It’s open range here and the cattle have the right of way…so be it… Leave them alone and they’ll come home wagging their tails behind them…Never turn your back on a bull…
