I’ve done light day hiking but i am planning to do some weekend hikes on the trail in VA. What do you guys think is the best method of water purification, not just in terms of purity, but also ease of use, and taste?

I only recently went from day hikes to backpacking; day hikes meant I carried the water I needed. With backpacking, my main concerns with treating water were effectivness and weight. I am really sold on Potable Aqua (iodine) tablets and their companion PA neutralizing tablets. Zero weight, kills the nasties, and when I use it according to directions, the water tastes as good as tap water. Iodine is used by travelers in the third world with
uniformly excellent results.

After reading Lawn Sale’s breakdown of water treatment I think that it would be nice to have a FAQ section and put his notes there for all to refer to easily. His work is one of the best I have seen here!
