Whats the weather like on the GA section of the AT during the month of May. What clothes would be best for this 75 mile hike. Im starting on the 1st of May.

It can be much colder than you would think. I brought a fleece and windbreaker which served me well except for one day when it was a cold rain all day and near freezinf rain in the morning. I could have used an extra layer but just for that one day. Other then that May was pleasant to very warm for me.

it’s probably best to prepare for about 30 degree nights. a cold front can come in and surprise you, although you’re likely to find the daytime temp to be cool, perfect hiking weather.

It is possible that a cold front might come in, but equally possible that it might be hot as *&#$ in May. I would suggest waiting until you are much closer to May 1st, check the weather reports and then pack based on that. It would be a bummer to pack out heavy warm clothes and then experience the sweltering GA heat. Especially on those GA uphills. Geez. Have fun!

I hiked from Springer to Dicks Creek Gap the first week of October. I listened to weather forecasts the day before the trip (70s no rain for a week). They were accurate the first 3 days and way off the last 3 (60s and rain). I carried a 20 degree bag and was comfy. I plan to go back next May and do Dick’s Creek Gap to Gatlinberg. I will bring both my 20 and 45 degree bags. I hope to be able to choose the 45 degree bag and leave the 20 degree bag in the car. I plan to use my car as a “bounce box”. :nerd

Shirtsleeve days, but could dip to 40s at night, if cold, and rainy. Yes, check weather just before you leave. GA had coldest April since 1940 last spring! Most likely will not get below 50 south of the Smokies. Looks like I’ll be right behind Steamer, Unicoi Gap, GA to Fontana Dam,NC, early May or mid April.
