When can we hike north out of Dunsmuir?

Hi all!

We’re looking to get back out to Northern CA to finish the stretch from Dunsmuir to Rt 140 in Southern OR this year. Our thruhike had a glitch last year due to a family death and we want to finish.

When can we conceivably get back out there? When’s the snow melted off, when do the bug come out, when’s the end of bug season, etc.? When do hiker-type services open up? Obviously we won’t be in thru-hiker season.

Since we haven’t gotten ourselves back into the “working” thing yet, we’d like to do it as soon as we can before we get committed to other things.

Thanks!!

I did this last summer. This section has snow in the early season between dunsmuir and Saied Valley. If you are not in any hurry to start might as well wait till August 1st otherwise you could try earlier in July.

Pika is right. I am a trail angel in Etna and I drive up to the Summit as often as I can and right now there is quite a bit of snow and even more on the Scott Mt. We had snow and hail yesterday in the low lands. The temps. have been running in the 20’s for quite some time. Hikers (on the average) come thru Etna usually at the end of June and early July. Etna is located between Dunsmuir and Seiad Valley.
