When is a tarp not a tarp?

I’ve been reading all the tarp related posts here since I’m considering getting one. I have one question for the group. Is a tarp with a sewn in floor still a tarp or is it really a tent in disguse?

I think i’ll call mine a tent/tarp rather than a tarp/tent. I guess a tent has a floor that doesn’t come off but then a circus “tent” is a tarp if it has no floor. Shelter, there.

Cool…
I’ve noticed some people are trying to make tarps more like tents and tents more like tarps especially the weight aspect. Is there a happy medium? :rolleyes

That’s kind of what I think I’m going for. We have several tents and they’re either to heavy or not big enough. They’re also more than five years old so they do pre-date go-lite. I modified one, a Mountain Hardware Light Wedge2 by cutting out the sides and replacing it with noseeum netting to get more air. That also dropped the weight down to 4.8#. But it is huge for two, three could squeeze in which is nice when we do altitude trips. Nice but heavy. Most tarps don’t have poles so they get lighter. But they also set up a little harder. A free standing tent goes anywhere, rock, what ever. I like fast up and fast down, less work. With what I’m making I use my trekking poles as the poles so there goes a half pound. We’ll see. Have a guess on my done weight for that jerky bag, ICS?:nerd

Look at campmor. You can get a really large ultra lite tarp that weighs in at 16 oz.
Tarp is defined as; a sheet of waterproof material.

Humor:

A tarp is not a tent in those instances when you can get through a night on the AT without fuzzy critters crawling over your face, you don’t wake up going down hill on a roller coaster of a ride due to wash out…you can’t believe you are not dreaming when you find yourself and your bag elevating a couple inches above the ground due to winds peaking at 30 + miles an hour on some mountain peak with your tarp and backpack quickly fading away in the distance, or if snakes or spiders become one with your sleeping bag or boots.

Just a thought.

How 'bout now. Well kids, you were all too heavy. airferret guessed 31.5, icantsleep guessed 32.o ozs, Onlyone went for 37.0. And the winner appears to be… no one. It came in, with guy lines, at 26ozs! Only 2ozs more than the one Henry makes himself! Airferret, if you’re still listening i’ll give it to you as the closest one. Shoot me an e-mail. I’ll post a pic of it in use Sunday, to see what ya’ll think, as we’re going to do an over nighter at the neighbors. Hope it rains.:cheers

My bad. It’s 32.5 ozs with the tuff sack I just made. Icantsleep wins as the closest guess. Where do I send the eats?
