if you went north to south…is leaving in august a good idea. i understand it snows in the souther states but how cold does it actually get in december if im in virginia.

Snow is a possibility in December and January. The southern mountains go to 6000’. We occasionally have snow in Maryland in December, and we’re at sea level. You’ll experience a lot of below freezing nights, possibly down to 0 degrees or less in the Smokies. Biggest problem with hiking in winter is the very long nights. It gets dark early in November and December. That said, if you have warm gear, a warm sleeping bag and tent (a tent adds 10 degrees), go for it.
