I am hiking J & K and want to avoid the brunt of the pack if possible.

I’d go right now. I was the 3rd hiker in 2003 to finish, and that was on August 23 (or maybe the 21rst, I can’t quite remember). There should be a few hikers coming into WA now, but the traffic should be low.
