Who cares? He’s a douche and offends everyone he comes in contact with. I honestly don’t know why he hikes, all he does is b*tch about everything and everyone. Definitely a strange bird.

People pay money to read about that guys hike? I don’t believe it. I met him and had to get away because I was afraid I would punch him in the nose if I spent another minute around that person.
yuk-yuk
I feared the day this guy showed up at my camp. I had heard negative things about him. One day he did show up and was very nice to me. He was interested in his negative image but did not disagree with his detractors. Fact is I found him to be intelligent and downright hysterical.

Apple, you must bring out the best in people–good for you!
Thanks again for the sodas and chairs last year.

I was hiking South out of Daleville, near Lambert Meadow camp site last Tuesday, June 9th and passed Minnesota Smith heading North. We introduced ourselves and talked briefly about the heat. All in all a pleasant encounter!

The thread is unintelligible to anyone outside the loop. What’s the deal with this guy anyway?

He is just another hiker. He is somewhat infamous for several different things. He and his girlfriend started the Pinoti Trail early this year, then were to continue on the AT. He ended up dumping her and making a number of folks angry. His journal complained a lot. just search and you can read (unless it’s been deleated)… Some folks like him, some don’t.

Minnisota Smith started his fist thru-hike in 2006 the same year I did mine. I came accross him sitting in the middle of the trail looking bewildered (Smokies) and he asked me which direction was northbound. He walked with me for a short distance and made sure I was aware of all his higher education and how intelligent he was. I could’nt wait to distance myself from him. He still showed at the next shelter and managed by morning to piss off the other 3 hikers and get repremanded by the Ridge Runner for that section.
His big legacy was the fact that he was very overweight, carried a massive back-pack loaded with doubble everything because he was so worried a dissater was about to strike at any momment, he hiked about 5-7 miles a day at a half mile an hour pace, and he always new more about every subject anyone would bring up. But he did manage to make it allot longer than most expected and other hikers had running bet as to when he was giong to finish, quit, injure himself, or get his ass kicked for pissing someone off. Supposedly by the end of the trail he had lost massive amounts of body fat (good for him, probably saved his life) and had developed a better disposition and hiker attitude than when he started. One hiker from New Jersey started the whole Whiteblaze posting craze that made him
the 2006 trail masscot of the year.
I myself asked how far he was going the next day and made sure to out hike him and never run into him again. I don’t care for the guy one bit.

Sounds a bit like a high IQ version of Beorn “The Tale of the Forest” ('95 '96, etc)
The obnoxious boasting generally covers for massive insecurities. It’s a pattern typical of some who never quite fit in off the trail and who haven’t yet gotten comfortable on the trail either.

One of them is MS, I’m not sure which, and does it really matter?
I met MS at Mags’ Rockies Ruck in Leadville, Colorado last year, and we did not hit it off either. He’s full of unsolicited advice and very disrespectful to women. But the man somehow achieved an AT thru hike in '06 and he has my respect for that.

And Jeffrey Dahmer was also a homeowner.

His 15 minutes are up. He was banned from Whiteblaze. Wondering about this schmuck is about as productive as rubbernecking at the scene of an accident. Come to think of it… that’s EXACTLY what it is.

What’s the big deal about being banned from Whiteblaze? And I think it’s pretty funny that most of the people whining about MS haven’t thru-hiked and probably have a whole let fewer miles than he has. Maybe some of these folks should hike more and gossip less.
