Where Is This? - Appalachian Trail

During my section hike early in May I hiked through an abandoned farm/cattle ranch area with old buildings, corrals and fences. I hiked along an old gravel road through the farm building area, then the trail angled left with a long walk across open grassy fields to the woods. Then over a stile and into the woods, with some more views to open fields encountered along the way. I think it was somewhere north of the Nick Grindstaff gravesite, and it could be at Tennessee Highway 91 or maybe Shady Valley Road. I think it was south of Low Gap and US 421. Copy and paste the link below to view one of the pictures I took there. If anyone has any information on this farm, who owned it, or the history of the trail through this section I would love to have it. For some reason I can’t seem to find any info in the ATC guidebook or Wingfoot’s, and I failed to write about it in my journal that day (May 6). I was hiking near Poler and Jack (her dog), Pilot, and Meanderthal that day. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me. CBiscuit

The section you are talking about is the new relocation from 91 to Double Springs shelter. The AT used to go that way then the land owner wanted it off. Recently the Forest Service purchased the land for over a million bucks.

Thanks, Wolf for the info. I’m still wondering if anyone has any more details on the property, what the section is called now, if anything. If I Google “Appalachian Trail Relocations” I get some specific info on other relocations, such as the one by 19E that now goes by Elk River and Jones Waterfall, but this one doesn’t come up. Any info appreciated.

Call Bob Peoples at Kincora Hostel. 423-725-4409. He worked on the relo.

That’s part of a section I’m getting ready to hike over Memorial Day. I have the ATC “Damascus to Moreland Gap” map © 1995,2001. It sounds as if the trail went through the farm then was moved off and then moved back on. Can anyone tell me which is on the map?

I’m getting a shuttle from Damascus south to 421 and then hiking back. Any up-to-date and out-of-the-ordinary information on this section would be gratefully appreciated.
