It may be cheapest to take the bus to Boston and fly out of Logan International Airport. Manchester, NH is closer and easier to get into and around. Flights are sometime slightly more expensive then Boston and I do not believe there are any direct flights to Denver. I think Bangor has an airport and I know that Portland Maine does. Bangor is small and I think both would be expensive because they are just regional even though they call themselves international airports (both have flights to Canada). I know a lot of people who come to Boston on a regular basis for business but fly out of Manchester because its easier.
Big B
After my 2002 hike, I flew out of Bangor to the Midwest. I purchased my ticket two weeks before I came home while finishing up in Maine. The price was quite fair, although I did not use the return side of the round trip. I gave myself a little extra time, so that if the weather was poor at Kathadin I wouldn’t have had to hike, although I did hike on a cloudy day, so there was no view at the top. It was so foggy, in fact, that I didn’t see the large rock pile on top.

While I think more people fly out of Bangor simply b/c it is closer. You can save a lot of money by flying out of Portland. That is how I got back from Maine.
