my partner and i want to hike a portion of the appalachian trail out of new york in mid to late october. we are flying in to JFK from europe and have no idea where to start and which stretch to do. we hike a lot back home so we can cope with up to 6000 feet a day and we would like something spectacular but suitable for fall weather conditions. thanks

If you take the subway to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, you can then catch a bus to a number of places on the AT. I suggest the Bear Mountain Inn or Rt 17 at Arden, NY. If you choose Arden (with many buses a day), you can just ask the driver to drop you at the trailhead.

Walking south on the AT for a few weeks, you’ll come to Harper’s Ferry West Virginia. There you can catch a train into Washington, DC and another (change at the same station) to New York City.

Alternately, you can catch the Metro North to Garrison, start at Graymoor and head north through Conn, Mass and into Vermont, catching the Vermontier Amtrak back to NYC from the Inn at the Long Trail. Depending on the amount of time you have, you could extend your trip into New Hampshire and find the hardest part of the AT. I found this to be a very pleasant section.

Sam, I live in NY and I've hiked all the AT in NY, and a lot of Maine, NH, and Virginia. Don't want to sound sour but the AT in NY is not spectacular. Nice, but not amazing like places in VT, NH, or Maine. On the other hand you'd be hiking in October so the trees would be very pretty. Bob and Brian mentioned good access points, the third one is Pawling NY, where the train stops right on the Appalachian Trail, on the Harlem Line of the Metro North. This stop is only available on weekends, but the train always goes to Pawling, a couple of miles south of that. You could get off there and go south on the AT to some of the access points Bob and Brian pointed out. I do love the AT in NY but except for Bear Mt. it's not very mountainous.
