You’ll find the majority of hikers will be camped out in the fields on the south end of town, down Shady Lane past the Rock School, You can’t miss the multitude of tents. It depends on what your looking for… “Tent City” is a great time for hikers, thousnds of us all camped out. Night time is filled with the beats of drums and music from the fire circle. There are shuttles that run from different parts of town to “Tent City”, but Damascus is really not that spread out. “The Place” is a local hostel right in town, many hikers camp out in the yard or stay in a bunk. There are several B&B’s also in town, though a few are rather pricey. Mt. Rogers also has a hiker hostel right on Main St. across from their store. You won’t have a problem finding a place to sleep. Enjoy the hike:cheers

If you want to have a little more privacy, I recommend Beartree Campground. I went to Trail Days 06 and stayed at Beartree out about 7 miles from Damascus and had a good time. It’s a full service campground, but because of Trail Days, it might fill up fast. They have a lake that has a good swimming area if the weather turns hot.

you may onlt tent at “the place” hostel or the main trail days campground or on the AT north or south of town

Tent City is nice if you don’t want to have to drive in and try to find a place to park everyday. Yes, it can be loud late and early in the morning. But you can tent smart. (like not near the fire circle or Billville) One of the directors last year told me that they were looking to expand the camping in the woods along the river for this year. If you go away from the main areas it will be quieter. No charge to camp, just to bring your car in.

You can of course tent for free in Damascus - and it can be fun to share the experience with others. But last Trail Days it rained something terrible a couple of nights. Tents were flattened by the winds, etc.
There is a B&B at the northern end of the Virginia Creeper (Bike) trail. Can’t remember their name - but a very nice place. They weren’t booked up in the past - but did cost around $100 per night. Pretty expensive. You can hitch into Damascus - about 15 miles away.
