I’m planning on hiking the AT this spring and can not decide between two packs. The first one is a Kelty illusion 3500 and the second is the cabela xpg 4000. Any suggestions would be great.

here’s another suggestion: the granite gear vapor trail. great suspension, great for size–can cinch it way down for a day-pack or expand it for long-term, great price ($150). it’s a minimalist pack, but you’ll soon find after being out there for a few weeks that you want to be carrying as little as possible. a 3500-4000 cubic inch pack isn’t necessary. remember that if you have the space, you’re likely to fill it!
that being said, go with what peaks said: if it feels good, buy it.

back packs are like saddles or an old favorite hat or pair o jeans. once broken it, they just fit you and ride correctly. there is a break in period. You have to perfect the best fit for the pack you buy not find the perfect pack that fits everyone else.
i would recommend consideration points.
the main concerns, get the answers to those questions for yer own expectations and you’ll be able to narrow down what is out that that would fill yer needs, then you can go with the real issues of why folks buy this stuff…you want that cool colored, massive pack, cause you wanna carry a side o beef and a DVD player to watch Videos…hehehe
burn
I agree with burn, with one warning. If it doesn’t fit right at the outfitter, don’t expect it to ever be right. If it feels good packed with your stuff while at the store it will only get better. Oo

Thanks to everyone. I’m going to my local outfitter and try some out for feel. I guess I’ll pay a little more there than online, but if they take the time to help me get the right one it would be worth it. Thanks again!
