Does anyone carry a white gas stove on the AT? Just wondering what’s required to re-supply. Do the locals sell it by the liter, or do you have to buy a whole gallon can at a time? I’m assuming it can’t be mailed ahead.

Yes you will find white gas for sale by the oz at many hostels and outfitters along the way. Alcohol is more prevalent however and may be less toxic to handle on the trail. I personally just build small cooking fires as needed and forgo the stove and fuel altogether. Have fun.

Even though many hikers have switched from white gas there are still enough hikers using it that it is available widely along the trail corridor. I used to use a white gas stove (Coleman Peak One) when I was doing shorter trips and would cook elaborate meals that required simmering or heat control. When I started doing hikes that covered multiple weeks it was too much of a hassle to cook when exhausted from a long day of hiking so switched to an alcohol stove for the weight savings and ease of use.

I used a white gas whisperlight and found fuel easily on a thru hike. I enjoyed its quick boil time and still use it to this day, four years later. Worth the weight to forgo the wait…

I have a Whisperlite, too, and I like its speed. Just wasn’t sure about the logistics of re-supplying, when it’s mostly available here in gallon cans. Thanks all.

Love the light weight of an alcohol stove but as fishngame said, I hate the wait. I want my coffee and I want it NOW! I’m bringing my Whisperlite.

When ur tired u dont want to wait. If u see urself getting low on fuel use the wood cookfires!
