White Mt. weather?

So I’m looking to hike an isolated area for 4-5 days next week, and the White Mountains seemed like they would be good for this. But what can I expect the weather to be like during this time of year? I’m not looking for ANY snow or cold weather.

Weather always varies in The Whites. We just had a week of rain with night time valley temps in the low 40’s and day temps in the 50’s. Average temps will climb and its bound to dry up but cold weather (below freezing) and rain will always come back from time to time. Pick a weather website and watch the forcasts for the area to try and get a good week. As for snow, right now its still out there in places where it piles up and drifts deep during the winter: deep, shaded cols between peaks, ravines on the leeward sides of Mount Washington and other places too, mostly above 3000’. I was at Ethan Pond yesterday and there is a foot-plus deep drift in the woods close to shores edge where the winds pile up snow all winter.

I’d be less worried about cold and snow and more worried about the black flies.

I’ve hiked many times in the White Mountains, and one rule of thumb I always follow is to be prepared for anything, at any time of year. And that includes snow and cold even in the middle of summer. It’s happened. Hypothermic conditions–especially rain when it’s in the 40s–can and does happen all the time there. If you’re adequately prepared, though, the backcountry of the White Mountains is definitely a place to see.

yup. these mountains are burly! they are unruly and yet so beautiful because of it. i have lived here all my life and i am never suprised by the mayhemic weather patterns that continue to plague these ranges. tis NO place to be ill prepared. pack for a gamble of sorts.

Try www.viewsfromthetop.com for trip reports, it’s an awesome site.

I love the Whites for the reasons listed, but they get a lot of traffic. As long as you plan for it, it’s not a problem, but it can get annoying in a traffic jam at 4,000 feet on a trail.
