White paint is not white

What’s up with the White Blazes? I Just finished a section of the AT between Grayson Highlands and Pearisburg VA and I had trouble seeing the White Blazes, all seemed light gray to me. Upon closer examination of many blazes and the consultation of other hikers we conclude that they are not using white paint. It’s more of a robbins egg blue. It’s not a matter of old paint. I closely looked at them, scraped etc. I wonder what people with the blue/green color blindness see? I like the bright white blazes best. I wonder if anyone else has seen this.

Nope, I haven’t seen them. Contact the ATC, with your concerns.

Or better yet, just take some “white” paint out on the trail and repaint them. I’m sure the maintainers from that area wpould appreciate it.

I hiked through that area in the spring and north of Pearisburg last week. Did not note that problem. Must have been painted in error.

Who cares what color the blazes are. Thank God, there are volunteers to take care of the trail for us.

I asked re tis once (some were painted over and I hiked back down the trail a couple of times) and I was told too many blazes were considered esthetically unpleasing and were removed! go figure!:oh

I noticed the same thing 2 years ago, especially in the stretch between Doc’s Knob and Wapiti shelters. I even sent them pictures of the faded-out blazes I did find, and got no response. It took a bunch of backtracking and finally meeting some hikers coming from the other direction to be sure I was on the AT. The esthetic argument is especially annoying when they put you on an old road and figure you don’t need any blazes for miles till they tell you to get off. What if it’s only 50 feet and you already missed the turn-off? That happened to me up near Delaware Water Gap 10 years ago.

please… please… please keep following the blazes and don’t come west. I hate rescues.
