Hi boy,

Not everything that Jack recommends is great. I followed his advice and have a few comments. Also some of the resupply suggestions are not practical (ex. Linden P.O. hidden route is impossible to find, Fontana Dam shelter is a far better deal than the Hike Inn he recommends, and more friendly). If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

I thought Jeff and Nancy Hoch were awesome when I went through, very friendly and helpful. When I was there the cost of a stay also included a ride to town and back, which solves the resupply issue in Fontana since the store at the village just is not all that great.

I used Jack’s guide as my main resource for resupply and found it to be really good (I had the companion too), YMMV, some things like store inventory are just out of his control so like everything else out there you do have to be ready to improvise.

Geez, sorry LD had some problems… over the years,I’ve told literally HUNDREDS of folks about the easy short-cut to the Linden store and P.O and he’s the only onewho’s ever told me they had a problem. If somehow, my directions weren’t clear or “practical”, I kinda think I’d have heard about this by now.

He’s also the first person I’ve EVER heard speak poorly of the Hike Inn. There are thousands of hikers who’ve enjoyed Jeff and Nancy’s hospitality over the years, and I’ve never heard an ill word spoken about them, ever. Sorry if he evidently had a bad time, but in light of their stellar repuation in the hiker community, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Making EVERYONE happy is sometimes simply impossible.

The re-supply post that appears at Whiteblaze and elsewhere is updated annually, and I get very good feedback on it. Incidentally, in the intro to the Re-Supply article, I make it very clear that different people will feel differently about different places; I also encourage people to let me know if they disagree with anything I said, or think I’ve omitted something important. I’m always eager to hear from folks about this information, and whether or not it was useful to them, and I’m always willing to alter the info, add to it, or change something in a future revision.

I’m sorry LD has two beefs with the article. In that there are around nine thousand other pieces of info in that piece, if these are his only two complaints, well I’d have to say that leaves me in pretty good shape.

P.S. I do indeed plan on revising and up-dating that article for the 2006 hikers, and I welcome comments from anyone who wishes to add to it, make a suggestion, or offer criticism or complaint.

Thanks B.J.,
Even after four years from when I thru hiked the info is still fresh. Way cool. 2 cents well taken.:cheers

I used Jack’s resup outline as the basis for my hike and it worked beautifully. After I got more trail savvy, I tweaked it and made things work for me, my way, but I’d say B. Jack’s info is golden for planning purposes. Even if Baltimore Jack is one of the most passive aggressive, pugnacious, defensive, knowledgeable curs you’ll likely cross paths with out there–truly a man out of time. Jack: Yoo da man!
