Just curious. I plan to give it whirl soon. Possibly next summer, but more probably in 2006 or '07.

Try posting the same question to CDT-L. You’ll probably get more responses there.

I’m looking at 2006, but perhaps this year. i hardly know where I’m going before i get there. i’m thikning southbound.
But I won’t be trying.

Tha Wookie - what do you mean by “I won’t be trying”???
You mean you’ll just wing it? The CDT isn’t an easy trail to play by ear - some planning really helps, though any plans you make are obviously subject to change with little notice. Or do you mean, you’ll go if it falls into place and if not you’ll do something else? Just curious.

i think he means that he is going to DO the cdt rather than TRY TO DO the cdt. i think its an expression of his confidence. remember the slogan from master yoda – “Do or do not. There is no try.”

I might be on the CDT this year, heading south sometime in early June when school is done. Or, I might go to the Himalaya for 3 months. I don’t know how far I’ll go, or what route I’ll take. I’m going to wing it as much as possible.

you got it thanks. I’m eliminating the word “try” from my vocabulary when appropriate.
Words can be quite powerful, and control over them is important to personal discipline for me ,although I admit that do slip from time to time. While I understand that weather or injury could put me off my path, wherever it may be, my attempt is not a “try”.
It’s a personal thing. I don’t judge others for the words they use. For them, it might totally different.
Although I do recognize that people (including myself) often appease others by saying “I’ll try to… [whatever]” when what they really mean is “I’m not going to… [whatever] but I’m afraid of too lazy to admit that now to you or myself, so I’ll let you hang on to my statement and wonder if I’m really ever going to.”
It might sound trivial, but I challenge anyone to take the passive “try” out of their speech and see how it changes things.

I’m gonna give the GDR a go and i’m wandering if anyone here knows of good maps. i got some on a disk from a fellow helping friend on-line. Hard to see piece by piece i need larger sections to look at and point at. I’m mostly looking for the sections that are close to the actual CDT hiking trial and that are not in wilderness areas. Anyone have real good suggestions for any section that would be good for mtbiking? thanks Dog

The maps that are put out by the people that created the GDR are pretty good. They include information on the towns such as resupply info on the back of the maps. (We found one stuck in a bush when we were crossing the Great Basin.) There is also a guidebook for the trail. Several hundred people a year ride that route. There is lots of info.

The Great Divide Bicycle Route was designed by AdventureCyling (dot com). Great people, great maps.
Splat!
Great Divide Bicycle Route maps are from AdventureCycling.org (not com as previously reported, my bad).

Its on my mind but haven’t decided anything for sure yet. Would need to get really excited about it first and that hasn’t happened yet. I realize that I am done with all of the “social” trails and that this would be a much different experience.

I understand! Hope that if I end up out there next year our paths cross and can buy you guys a beer.

In '98 when 7 of us started out from Antelope Wells, our shuttle person asked us each if we were going to be successful in hiking all the way to Canada. I am the only one who said “yes, i will make it” well, guess what? I’m the only one of the 7 who did complete the whole trail that year. I think your attitude means as much as your gear, if not more! Didn’t Grandma Gatewood say: “more head than heel!”

My wife and I are hiking the CDT in 2006, with my buddy Neil from England (we hiked together for 4+ months on PCT '99). With less than 12 months to go, we’re getting excited!

You’re the first other hikers I’ve heard who are planning to be out next year. I hope we meet along the way. Are you on CDT-L too? Members of Aldha? Are you planning to head north or south? Or do you know yet? We’ll be heading north, at least at first. You’re right, it is a great thrill to reach the one year mark. All of a sudden you start realizing all that needs to be done between now and then (we’re selling our house and moving everything into storage.) I know I’ll be reading the journals with close attention. Several have started already - following their adventures should make the time pass more quickly. I know of ten journals for this year - that’s means there are a lot of people out there since many don’t journal publicly.
Ginny
I just subscribed to CDT-L. No, I let my ALDHA adn ALDHA-West memberships lapse after PCT in 99. N or S? Depends on next winter inteh Rockies, but we’d like to try orthbound if possible.
We’re actually in the process of moving into a new house that we just bought (in Bend, OR!). We’re just getting started reading journals – it’s a lot of time on the computer!

I have hiked CDT from Mex to Yellowstone looking for someone interested in hooking up for south to north hike 1/2 or all of Mont. Need a partner for Jul-Aug 06 my wife won’t let me go alone. Male or female ok but if female my wife has to check you out. I am a retired social worker so I like heavy conversations, bird watching, and nature in general also am 49er fan so can talk football too. I hike about 15-18 mile days and like to start early.
