Wild Goose Chase?

									Hi everyone,

I could use some help.

I’m trying to track down the register that was at Bascom Lodge on Mt. Greylock in 2004. It may still be there (and I’ll check once it opens back up for the season (in May, I believe?), but I also understand that it was closed for 2 years and changed management, so I fear the former management may have kept the old registers.

Why do I need this?

Almost 3 weeks after I finished my thru-hike in 2004, Rain Man posted in my trailjournal guestbook telling me I should check out this link. The link is for an article on usatoday.com about the AT and Bascom Lodge. And, at the very end of this article, my register entry is quoted!

I remember writing the entry and thinking “This is a good one.” I remember writing it WANTING people to read it. I remember thinking, 'I should copy this into my own journal." But then I didn’t. I, either romantically or foolishly, decided to keep it just for the Lodge register.

I guess I could explain better/further. But, long story short, I’m just hoping to find it (not keep it!) so that I can copy my entry.

Anyone have any ideas how I may locate it? Thank you.

									This?

“Then again,” wrote the hiker, “I know that after a few days I’ll have to accept reality and get a job. And pay bills. And take care of responsibilities. And then, like many other thru-hikers before me, I’ll probably think of how much better it would be to go back to hiking.”

I don’t know if posting the URL will work/is acceptable. My apologies if not. It tried clicking the URL button at the top of the ‘body’ portion of this post, but nothing happened.

Google has a scan of The Post and Courier from 2005 with your quote in it: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2482&dat=20050410&id=iG1JAAAAIBAJ&sjid=6AoNAAAAIBAJ&pg=1295,4534488

Yes, those links go to the article (Funny...it used to say "A hiker who dubbed himself "Leki-less" etc.)

But I’m looking for the register itself so i can read my entire journal entry. I know it sounds crazy and may be a wild goose chase, but I’m seriously considering a new career in writing and I remember at the time that I wrote that entry, I did it with the specific intentions of having it be noticed and be significant. It was obviously noticed by someone, and at least that part was significant enough to be quoted in that article, so it gives me a sort of pride and a longing to see what else I wrote.

I believe it will be hard to track down. The management of Bascome has changed hands at least twice since 04. The state leases Bascome to private groups. There has not been a register there for quite some time only a guest book. Very little room for comments. I hiked about a 1000 in 04, you are a good writer or I would not have remembered you.

Thank you, Blue Jay. I appreciate the compliment.

I regret not keeping up with my journal more back in '04, especially knowing there were people following it wanting to know the second half of my journey. I was younger and less disciplined then!
