Wilderness Permitt - Does destination matter?

Looking at the previous thread. Does the destination really matter if you get a permit for Happy Isles? Lets say I get my permitt for Happy Isles/Little Yosemite Valley, but then when I get there, I feel like continuing on to Sunrise? What do I risk? Will the ranger tell me that I can’t camp there and I have to turn around and hike back to Little Yosemite Valley? Could I just continue past Sunrise and camp off-trail?

As the permit will specify an entry and exit trailhead I guess that you are ok if you are somewhere between the 2 places. If you have a permit for Happy Isles/Little Yos exiting at say Tuolumne, continuing to Sunrise will not be a problem.

I think the Happy Isles/LYV entry trailhead is for people camping at Little Yosemite then coming back out at Happy isles and the other Happy Isles ones are for those planning on hiking further.

If you are getting your permit in person and look rough and ready enough, you can sometimes convince the ranger to book you into a distant camping zone. I think the idea is that you need to make an effort to actually get there. I think generally rangers have less problem with people who go too far than people who don’t go far enough. Realistically, they are just trying to keep the crowd at LYV down to a managable size. It is a zoo there anyway - hike on through!
