Okay, so I was a little mean. I’m sorry, Jesse. Still, I spent some quality time with WF during my thru-hike and it was very enlightening. I called him “Wingnut” too, but quickly changed when I learned a bit about him. Getting sent the wrong way once or twice, (I’m remembering a certain hot dog stand in NY) yeah it happened. If you don’t hike the trail every year, it’s hard to get perfect info. His book is definitely a great start to get you from one end to the other. If you send him a note with updates and suggestions, he will definitely adjust his book.

PS. Sweeper, Pinball and I finished in early November. Already itching to get back into the woods. Did you get that picture we sent of you finishing up the LT? We’ll most likely be down in Raleigh soon. My folks live there. I’ll let you know, would be cool to swap stories. Grimace

You’ll really be fine with the 2001 version of the book. Things do change, but not that much. And even in the updated version of the book, you’ll find when you get places that restaurants have closed or moved, new hostels have opened or closed, etc… However, the trail itself doesn’t change all that much, so you’ll really be fine.

I like the ATC Companion, too, but it doesn’t work well with a personal quirk of mine. When I think about the trail, I think in terms of mile numbers: Max Patch is at 251, Roan Mountain is at about 414 or so, etc… When I remember where and when things happened, I remember the mile number. With the Companion, the miles are organized by section, and it drives me crazy. But I suppose I could write my own numbers in…

I laughed when I saw that since that is exactly what I have been doing. I also like the mile numbers printed next to the shelters, towns, etc. Plan to carry Wingfoot’s 2001 guide and the 2002 Companion. Split both into 4 section and plan to carry sections I need and compare both guides along the way. There are things I like about both.
